ELEMENTARY CORE MUSIC TEACHER

1. DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL LEVEL DELIVERY MODEL

The Core Music Program, based on the Ministry Arts Education curriculum, is taught by itinerant teachers. The Core Music teacher will:

a) prepare a draft schedule for core music programs in designated schools, after consultation with individual school staffs and administration for approval of administration;

b) implement the program in keeping with District and Ministry expectations; and,

c) ensure care, inventory and maintenance of school equipment.

2. MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

To be qualified as an Elementary Core Music Teacher the teacher must have:

a) a valid B.C. Teacher’s Certificate;

b) satisfactory practicum / teaching experience in elementary education (preferably K-4) or other teaching experience deemed to be comparable: and,

c) bachelors specialization in music or music education or a Graduate Diploma (PB+15) Program – Elementary Music Specialization.

d) as an alternate to (c) above, the following are viewed as equivalent training:

1. demonstrated ability to read music; and

2. one course with a significant component of Music pedagogy such as SFU – Education 478-4 (Designs for Learning: Music); UVIC – Music 237 (Music in the Elementary School Curriculum); or, UBC equivalent to the above courses; and,

3. three university level courses (or the equivalent) from any of the following areas:

a) choir

b) strings – guitar and/or ukulele

c) ORFF &/or Kodaly

d) recorder

e) drumming – Djembe, Taiko

f) equivalent coursework or demonstrated expertise in playing & teaching the playing of a musical

   instrument.

3. PREFERRED ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

It is preferred that Core Music Teachers possess a specialization in one of the following: Bachelors of Education – Music Education, Graduate Diploma (PB+15) Program – Elementary Music Specialization, or Masters of Educations – Music Education.

4. REPORTING STRUCTURE

The personnel in this position are accountable on the execution of their assigned duties by the principal(s) of the schools to which they are assigned.
